Job Title:PhlebotomistDuties: I. Specimen CollectionExplain rationale for laboratory tests and patient preparation to patients.Accurately enter specimen, patient, and physician information intolaboratory information system.Correctly identify patient before specimen collection.Determine if patient has met any preparation criteria necessary for type oftesting.Determine correct type of specimen and specimen container.Utilize appropriate order codes in Laboratory Information SystemCollect all types of specimens following prescribed guidelines, includingbut not limited to:Venous blood samplesCapillary blood samplesUrine samplesUrines samples for drug screenThroat swabs for cultureBreath alcohol testingStool specimensAccurately label all specimens with appropriate information.Verbally notify testing personnel of any specimen that requires specialhandlingEvaluate and solve problems related to specimen collectionII. Perform Pre-analytic Specimen HandlingMeasure, aliquot, add appropriate preservatives, and label specimenswhen appropriate.Prepare samples for transport to reference laboratory. Prepare appropriatepaperwork/requisitions for reference labs. Package specimens for shipment.Evaluate and solve problems related to pre-analytic specimen handling.III. Perform Receptionist/Clerk functionsAnswer and direct phone calls.Take verbal orders from heath care providersRead request forms and determine correct in-house or send out test to perform.If necessary, clarify written orders with ordering physician or agencythrough appropriate channels.Accurately enter patient demographic, billing information and test order inlaboratory computer system. Obtain patient consent as applicable.Ensure medical necessity for test requests utilizing currently availableinformation. Inform patients of limited coverage.Prepare envelopes or other material necessary to distribute reports accordingto instructions on request.Transfer all information that pertains to report distribution.After patient reports have been released by technical personnel, followlaboratory procedure for report distribution.Accurately utilize fax modem and other fax systems to transmit reports.Utilize database to look up test results and provide copies to authorizedpersons.File patient request and hard copies of reports.Requirements of the job:Must be at least 18 years of age; must pass background check and drugtest; must have drivers license;EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCEHigh school diploma or GED. Completion of Certified Phlebotomist programdesirable. One year related experience and/or training; or equivalentcombination of education and experience.CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONSCompletion of nationally recognized certification is desirable. Basic CPR isrequired. CPR training is provided through Heart of the Rockies RegionalMedical Center.Wages and how often paid:Pay is negotiable; paid bi-weekly.Shift days and hours to be worked:This is a permanent full-time; 36 hours per week; days and hours workedwill be determined by employer.
