Job Title: Emergency Medical Technician

Status: Non-Exempt

SUMMARY: The mission and purpose of this position are to compassionately deliver high-quality service and basic patient care in a professional, caring and cost-effective manner.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 Assess each call situation to determine best course of action and appropriate protocol.

 Utilize medical equipment to assess patient and carry out basic life support functions.

 Develop and utilize triage skills to provide optimal efficiency during calls.

 Assist paramedic or nurse with the preparation of advanced life support equipment.

 Provide patient care according to clinical protocols and safety requirements.

 Lift and move patients as required to provide optimum care.

 Communicate with receiving facility to receive medical direction and to provide critical information.

 Communicate with patient and loved ones to provide information and assurance that care is being given, and to show compassion.

 Act as team leader and take responsibility for scene management as needed.

 Drive the ambulance or provide map reading support to minimize call response time.

 Keep current on certifications.

 Coach and educate partners of new and changing information as necessary.

 Communicate with dispatcher to receive and understand call data and customer feedback.

 Monitor and maintain the general condition of the unit, keep it clean and stocked for optimal call response to maintain the image of MedTrans.

 Participate in community programs to maintain MedTrans image and establish strong community relations.

 Document activities completely to ensure appropriate information is available regarding each call.

 Follow policies and procedures regarding out-of-chute times and turnaround times.

 Negotiate with customers regarding additional service when appropriate (e.g., return transport).

 Consider patient status and insurance preferred facilities when determining transportation destinations.

 Maintains prompt and regular attendance.

 Protect the privacy of all patients’ information in accordance with the MedTrans privacy policies, procedures, and practices, as required by federal and state law and in accordance with general principles of professionalism as a health care provider.

 Access protected health information and other patient information only to the extent that is necessary to complete your job duties.

 Actively participate in MedTrans privacy training and is required to communicate privacy policy information to coworkers, students, patients and others in accordance with MedTrans policy.

 Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Operations Manager.

Basic Background Qualifications:

The educational background, specific knowledge and specific career experiences required (and desired) to be considered as a potential job candidate are shown below. Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or equivalent (GED). 18 years of age. Current State EMT License. Current Health Care Provider CPR Card. Valid Drivers License. Driving record in compliance with MedTrans policy regarding insurability. Some advanced education preferred. Some past work experience, preferably in healthcare desired. Basic EKG and IV/Mast certification preferred. Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.

Physical Requirements:

Occasionally: Smelling.

Frequently: Lifting 200 lbs., kneeling, stooping, bending, leaning, flexibility, multiple physical activities performed at the same time (carrying multiple equipment while pushing on pram).

Constantly: Hearing/listening, clear speech, simple touching, walking (inside and outside), pushing, pulling, reaching, sitting, driving ambulance, seeing.

Working Environment:

Occasionally: Works alone, inside, confined areas noise other hazardous conditions (human excrement, blood, urine, mucous, tissue, asbestos)

Frequently: Electrical equipment.

Constantly: Works with others, face-to-face contact, verbal contact with others, works outside, shift work, extended days.

Mental Requirements:

Occasionally: Reading (simple and complex), writing (complex), memorization, analyzing, math skills (simple).

Frequently: Writing (simple), judgement, reasoning.

Constantly: Decision making

Equipment Used:

Occasionally: Wheelchair, medications, monitor/defibrillator, suction equipment, airway equipment, Telephone, vacuum cleaner, cleaning equipment, protective devices, protective clothing.

Frequently: IV Supplies, bandaging, disposable supplies, durable equipment.

Constantly: Gurney, maps, pager, trauma bag/box.
