We are seeking an exceptional individual for the Nurse I (Registered Nurse) position within our facility.

Our ideal candidate is a caring leader who will provide professional skilled nursing activities in a mental health setting that include: acute care, chronic support, assessment, and interventions. Although this position will be assigned to a specific shift and unit, you occasionally may be required to work any unit.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide direct patient care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating all aspects of treatment. This could include: family involvement, case management, formulation of individualized nursing care plans, implementing infection control measures, delivering crises intervention, providing direct patient contact in individual and group therapy sessions, teaching patients and co-workers, and providing direct care in emergency situations.

  • Assess, evaluate, and communicate changes in mental status related to medication effectiveness and adverse reactions.

  • Documents and updates patient records per nursing department standards

  • Evaluate patient care on an ongoing basis to ensure continuity of care

  • Monitors infection control including equipment sterility

  • Employs de-escalation techniques, counseling, and intervenes with Therapeutic Interventions for Physical Safety to control assaultive or self-destructive behavior.

  • May be responsible to explain work processes, train, and assign task to Psychiatric Care Technician, Licensed Practical Nurse, Mental Health Clinician and/or Client Care Aide.

  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications:

Current, valid licensure as a Registered Nurse License issued by the State of Colorado or any State participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).**

Preferred Qualifications

  • Charge Nurse Experience

  • Specialized professional nursing experience in a Behavioral Health, Forensic, Youth or Geriatric Unit.

  • Demonstrated ability to direct the shift through training, mentorship and development.

  • A strong work ethic based on a foundation of: self-motivation, loyalty, honesty, and integrity.

  • Dependable, responsible, and adaptable.

Highly Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to effectively direct staff.

  • Ability to effectively treat patients with mental illness.

  • Ability to maintain required licensure/credentials.

  • Knowledge of the nursing process to provide direction and care for patients with medical and psychiatric needs.

  • Customer/Personal Service - knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services, this includes needs assessment.

  • Psychology - knowledge of human behavior and performance, individual difference in ability, personality, and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.

  • Knowledgeable in nursing processes

  • Active Listening and communication

  • Judgment, Decision Making, and Problem Sensitivity - the ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong; to include not only solving the problem, but recognizing there is a problem.

  • Oral and Written Communication Skills – the ability to speak and write effectively; providing valid and pertinent information to peers, coworkers, and subordinates.

  • Monitoring/Assessing performance.

  • Organization Skills.

  • Documentation/Recording Information - entering, transcribing, recording, storing, or maintaining information in written or electronic form.

  • Computer Skills/Software - knowledge of Microsoft Office software, excel spreadsheet, database software and email.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo's required orientation/training

  • Ability to perform all the essential functions of the job including physical restraints of assaultive patients.

  • Must be able to follow prescribed policies and procedures even if they may conflict with your "personal" preferences.

  • Ability to work with staff and patients of diversity to include social, economic, ethnic, and religious backgrounds in a mental setting

  • Work in a secure facility in locked and unlocked environments.

  • A Tuberculosis Test (TB) will be required upon hire.

  • A pre-employment criminal background check will be conducted as part of the selection process as this position is deemed to have direct contact with vulnerable persons. Felony convictions, conviction of crimes of moral turpitude, or convictions of misdemeanors related to job duties may disqualify you from being considered for this position. Should your background check reveal any charges or convictions, it is your responsibility to provide the CDHS Background Unit with an official disposition of any charges. Additionally, you will be required take and pass a drug screen.

Essential Attributes:

  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50+ pounds on occasion.
