Description of Job

This work unit exists to provide a safe, secure, therapeutic setting for comprehensive/holistic care of patients with both psychiatric and medical issues to include evaluation and treatment. This includes 24 hour nursing care for patients. The focus of treatment is stabilization, increase knowledge base, increase knowledge of treatment options (i.e. medications), individual and group therapy, discharge planning, working with families, support systems for patients, and an understanding of mental health issues/medical issues. Patients with substance abuse issues, developmental disabilities, physical handicaps, and multiple medical diagnoses also have multiple needs in addition to mental health stabilization and are treated on this work unit. Patients are admitted for the purpose of evaluation, observation, and treatment. Legal status of patients may include ITP, competency exams, NGRI, short term, long term or long-term extension. The unit goal is to treat the severely mentally ill, return them to their optimal level of functioning and assist them in returning to the community as appropriate.

The purpose of this position is to provide constant and consistent nursing oversight, administrative oversight and management of nursing personnel (24 hour a day/7 days a week) on one or two units. Carry a hospital cellular phone while not at work and answering the hospital cellular phone immediately when not at work. Provide consistent/constant management and direction to all direct care nursing staff and nursing shift supervisors on their assigned unit(s) on all shifts. Serve as a resource and mentor to all nursing staff. Promote and maintain nursing staff efficiency. Oversee the attainment and achievement of unit/Program/Hospital/Nursing Department goals. Collaborates with other leaders across the hospital. Represents the Nursing Department in hospital-wide committees and work groups. Applications of knowledge, expertise and experience in providing safe and effective patient care. Provide immediate crisis intervention in the milieu and response to all emergency situations.

Job Duties:

  • Responsible for the direction, supervision and management of all Nursing staff of the assigned unit.

  • This position works in conjunction with the Program Chief Nurse PCN to fill vacant positions via promotion, recruitment of new hires, and internal transfers.

  • The Lead Nurse coordinates staffing schedules by utilizing knowledge of acuity, and pool staff to maximize the quality of care given to unit patients.

  • Personnel needs are communicated to the Nursing Administration immediately.

  • Assignment to committees and hiring panels are made by the PCN.

  • This position is responsible for all the nursing services provided on the assigned unit.

  • The position is responsible that all nursing assignments and duties are completed and in compliance with CMHIP policies and psychiatric and medical nursing standards, licensure requirements and governing bodies.

  • Unit nursing staff is notified promptly of changes to processes, policies and procedures through communication methods to include Cornerstone Rosters, meetings, email and individual contact.

  • Unit nursing is assigned mentors for guidance and training ensuring information is clear. Individual supervision is conducted regularly.

  • The Lead Nurse implements actions to maximize the quality of patient care at the unit level by directing and coordinating the timely reporting of statistical and quality assurance data.

  • Nursing participation is coordinated at the unit level through interdisciplinary, monitoring, evaluation and follow-up on QA/Pl activities.

  • The Lead Nurse reviews patient occurrences and responds to performance issues of assigned staff.

  • He/She performs audits of Nursing documentation to identify and address staff deficiencies.

  • Follow up of chart deficiencies occurs regularly to develop performance measurement tools for improvement of processes and decrease errors. Also, collaborates with non-nursing personnel to address related performance issues.

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications:

Valid Registered Nurse License from the State of Colorado, or any state participating in the Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC), AND four (4) years of professional experience as a registered nurse which included at least one (1) year of experience supervising professional nursing staff.

Professional Nursing Experience is defined as work experience as a Registered Nurse. Your application must clearly state your experience at this level; statements such as "see resume" or "nursing duties" will not be accepted.

Substitutions:

There is no substitution for the required licensure. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in nursing may substitute for one year of the required professional nursing experience, but not for the required one-year supervisory experience. A master's degree or doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in nursing may substitute for two years of the required professional nursing experience, but not for the required one-year supervisory experience. (A copy of your official transcripts must be attached to your application to receive credit for the substitutions.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Leadership experience supervising/managing a environment which requires collaboration with multiple disciplines.

  • Professional Nursing experience in a Behavioral Health, Forensic, medical and Geriatrics.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead different nursing disciplines on the unit through training, mentor ship, development, and quality care improvement measures.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, day and evening shifts, weekends, and holidays and back-to-back shift and double shifts as needed.

  • Must be accessible to immediate telephone communication. Must be able to follow prescribed policies and procedures even if they may conflict with "personal" preferences.

  • Ability to work with staff and patients of diverse backgrounds to include social, economic, ethnic, and religious backgrounds

  • Work in a secure facility in locked and unlocked environments

  • Work any unit as assigned by the appointing authority

  • A Tuberculosis Test (TB) and other immunizations will be required upon hire and maintain current.
