Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, is the nation’s primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. A postdoc position is available in the Materials Science Center, in the area of thin film synthesis and characterization of novel oxide materials for application in solar thermal hydrogen production, novel synthesis of functional polymorphs and development of new oxide dielectric materials.

The position would support three collaborative programs with university and National Laboratories and NREL. These include projects under the Energy Frontier Research Center for Next Generation Materials by Design, use of advanced functional oxides for solar thermal hydrogen production and high temperature electrolysis under the HydroGen EMN and a program under geothermal energy conversion for high temperature drilling technologies. Specific duties would involve the solution synthesis through precipitation, bulk ceramic synthesis and hydrothermal synthesis as well as physical vapor deposition (e.g. pulsed laser deposition, magnetron sputtering) of new functional oxide materials new functionality as above and be used as part detailed characterization of the oxide in-situ both at NREL and at National Light Sources. The work would involve synthesis, confirmation of structure and purity, testing under functiona conditions. The job duties would also include improving existing experimental synthesis equipment and establishing new characterization tools and data handling protocols compatible with thin film sample studies. A key part of the work is the interaction with a variety of team members in these highly collaborative projects.

Basic Qualifications

Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.

Additional Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

Successful candidates should have prior experience in materials research for functional oxides including those for high temperature applications. Some experience at national synchrotron facilities is desirable. Other preferred skills include hands-on experience with thin film synthesis (sputtering, pulsed laser deposition, molecular beam epitaxy) and thin film characterization (chemical, structural, microscopic). Prior experience in working in multidisciplinary teams is desireable.

Submission Guidelines

Please note that in order to be considered an applicant for any position at NREL you must submit an application form for each position for which you believe you are qualified. Applications are not kept on file for future positions. Please include a cover letter and resume with each position application.
