Description of Work Unit

At the CSU VTH, we exist to educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community every day. The Dermatology service instructs professional and paraprofessional Veterinary residents, interns, and Medical students in a surgical and clinical setting with an emphasis on practical applications of dermatology, diagnostic tests, client interactions, and clinical treatment of dermatology cases of small animals, and occasionally, large animals. This work unit also provides a professional research environment.

Position Summary

This position provides technical support to the existing Vet Tech II and provides flexibility with the veterinary technology role within the unit.

Minimum Qualifications

An associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology and one year of full-time general veterinary technician experience.

Substitutions

Additional appropriate experience will substitute for the required Associate’s degree on a year-for-year basis.

Essential Job Duties

Job Duty Category Dermatology Technical Support and Care

Duty/Responsibility

  • Perform the following: blood draws, prepare POC diagnostic procedures, prepare estimates, restraint of small animals, sedation, TPR’s, Dermatology exams.

  • Organize incoming appointments, assists with appointments.

  • Transportation of patients from the parking lot to exam room and to various procedure locations throughout the hospital.

  • Admit and discharge patients with the correct education regarding their pet’s medical problem.

  • Give subcutaneous medications.

  • Instruct the clients on how to give allergy injections and potential side effects.

  • Coordinate all surgical and non-surgical procedures.

  • Set up, placement of sterile and non-sterile equipment for surgical and non-surgical procedures.

  • Provide supportive nursing care to the patients undergoing dermatology treatments or procedures and provide care as needed.

  • Stock the intradermal skin test kit biweekly. Formulate and stock the allergen vials monthly for immunotherapy testing.

  • Complete StringSoft Modules and training.

  • Perform the following: creating Invoices, estimates, prints labels and various forms, pharmacy refills and FAX refills to various outside pharmacies.

  • Contact referring veterinarians to obtain the patients past medical history, histology, and lab work, receiving and downloading digital records into Stringsoft system.

  • Client communication by answers rounds room phone and email, takes and relays daily messages.

  • Communicates clinician recommendations to client.

  • Directly contact clients to help coordinate their trip to CSU VTH, explain what to expect while at CSU.

  • Provide estimate to client prior to visit to CSU VTH.

  • Clean exams rooms and stocks with various items and paperwork.

  • At all times, keeps exams room properly cleaned and orderly.

  • Cleans, and stocks various items in the dermatology procedures and Otoscopy procedures areas.

  • Take sterile packs and equipment to Central Supply, returns sterile packs and supplies to treatment rooms.

  • Maintain and cleans clippers and blades.

  • Maintain, clean and stock in-house lab(A117).

  • Set up biannual microscope maintenance.

  • Assist in lab set up (including resident labs and student labs), and acquiring cadavers, Assisting with instrumentation, setup/handling/cleanup.
