Description of Work Unit

An inaugural class of medical school students will enroll at Colorado State University in fall 2021. The collaboration between CSU and the University of Colorado’s School of Medicine to open a medical school branch in Fort Collins will expand medical education opportunities in Colorado and build on the strengths of both universities through an innovative, far-reaching curriculum. The Fort Collins branch will allow students to have more direct opportunities to work with clinicians and more continuity with patients, all while enjoying a smaller class size and community.

The Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences (ERHS) (https://vetmedbiosci.colostate.edu/erhs/) is home to one of the largest environmental health undergraduate programs in the nation, and the only one that incorporates radiological health into its core curriculum. ERHS is home to 70-75 undergraduate Environmental Health students, over 140 graduate students, and 41 faculty members. ERHS is a highly interdisciplinary department with graduate programs in Toxicology, Epidemiology, Health Physics, Occupational & Environmental Health, Radiation Cancer Biology & Oncology, and Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. Each of these entities have their own nationally and internationally recognized research activities and academic programs with the ultimate unifying goal of promoting human and animal health and well-being. Faculty research programs are supported by several federal agencies including NIH, NASA, DOE, CDC, NRC, EPA, DOL, and DHS. The department has a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching, as well as the training of veterinary medical students and residents and will participate in future medical school instruction.

Position Summary

Colorado State University (CSU) and the University of Colorado School of Medicine (CUSOM) have partnered to create a 4-year branch campus at CSU. This program will be based on an innovative patient-centered curriculum being developed in conjunction with the CUSOM, called the “Trek”. The primary focus of this full-time faculty position is to develop, implement, and teach toxicology at the CSU branch campus in Fort Collins and contribute to the research and/or teaching mission of the Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences. Content delivery starts July 2021 with matriculation of an inaugural class and continues with active involvement throughout all four years of the medical education process.

The curriculum is patient-centered and will introduce medical students to core knowledge pertaining to toxicology and impart the skills necessary to develop into a competent physician. The toxicology and pulmonary content will be delivered directly by the toxicology faculty and additional co-educators. The position requires incorporating Toxicology into all aspects of medical education in the Foundation (basic sciences curriculum) year. The successful candidate will work with the Basic Sciences Director and team to incorporate concepts based on content expertise into all aspects of medical education.

The successful candidate will be hired as a faculty member in the Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences (ERHS) within the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (CVMBS) at CSU. Accordingly, the position will have options to contribute to graduate and undergraduate education, develop an externally-funded scholarly research program, and to participate in other ERHS departmental service activities.

This position is expected to begin at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. Final hiring rank and tenure track consideration are negotiable and will depend on the qualifications and experience of the applicant. Tenure-track consideration will be given to candidates with a history of tenure-track employment, evidence of sufficient scholarly activity, or other qualifying credentials.

Key duties of this position will include: *Teaching and Curriculum Execution and Medical Program Innovation *Curriculum Review, Continuous Quality Improvement, and Accreditation *Collaboration and participation: -Work with other course and content directors across both campuses to improve and standardize elements of curriculum, develop policies, provide input, ensure compliance with LCME standards, as well as disseminate best practices -Partner with CSU and CU on diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts -Create a climate of inclusivity that includes cultural sensitivities and awareness and respect for differences

Required Job Qualifications

PhD, MD, or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) with expertise in toxicology or related discipline with specialty in pulmonary toxicology

Preferred Job Qualifications

Experience teaching fundamentals of toxicology, pulmonary physiology and pathology, metabolism and disposition of toxic agents, toxicological mechanism and pathology, and risk assessment

Experience with any medical school curriculum

Experience integrating toxicology with community health

For Assistant Professor level: Demonstrate potential and ability to develop an externally funded research program For Associate Professor level: Record of externally funded research
