Description of Work Unit

It is the mission of the Colorado State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory system to provide timely, accurate and pertinent animal disease diagnostic services and educational outreach to veterinarians, animal industries and animal interests. The Diagnostic Lab will strive to meet the goals of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biological Sciences and the University through research to develop new approaches to disease identification, investigation, prevention and through education of professional veterinary medical, graduate and post-doctoral students.

Position Summary

This position will provide laboratory support and laboratory technical services to the Bacteriology section of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. This position will assist with Bacteriology section functions and diagnostic testing. This position will coordinate activities of the prep (autoclave) room and coordinate media/reagent preparation.

Required Job Qualifications

Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in microbiology, biology or related scientific field OR bachelor’s degree in any field plus 2 years’ experience in bacteriology research, testing, or diagnostics, preferably in a veterinary laboratory or veterinary hospital, is required.

The applicant should be responsible and able to work in a team environment. This position will be full-time with a Monday through Friday workweek with alternating Saturdays, depending on case workload and section functionality. This position will be required to work some holidays, based on unit holiday staffing needs. This position may also be required to occasionally work after-hours (night, weekend) due to emergency diagnostic testing needs.

Preferred Job Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include experience in a bacteriology laboratory and knowledge of basic bacteriology procedures, including how to make media, streak plates and set up samples for bacteriology culture.

Essential Duties

Job Duty Category Bacteriology Laboratory Responsibilities

Duty/Responsibility

• Set up samples for bacteriology testing, including reviewing accessions, preparing/handling diagnostic samples and general sample processing (ex – plating on the appropriate media) • Assist with bacteriology serology testing and serve as primary backup • Assist with bacteriology culture procedures as needed and serve as a backup (ex – streaking plates, work with laboratory technicians to perform testing protocols such as bacterial culture and susceptibility) • Use diagnostic equipment as part of sample testing, including processing samples using the MALDI-TOF and VITEK instruments • Properly incubate samples/media • Organize sample paperwork and report results as directed by laboratory technicians or section head • Organize, maintain and prepare all bacteriology laboratory supplies • Ensure quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of all reagents, media and equipment for the laboratory. Document all QA/QC work performed. • Maintain appropriate records, including diagnostic testing and QA/QC records • Provide input on standard operating procedures, write basic SOPs for the laboratory, with section head guidance • Effectively communicate with supervisors and coworkers regarding activities and other issues important to the successful completion of activities.

Job Duty Category Prep (Autoclave) Room Responsibilities

Duty/Responsibility

• Organizing the prep room and maintaining a clean environment • Autoclaving trash and biological waste for the VDL and other South Campus submitters. • Preparing and autoclaving supplies, media, reagents, etc, as needed by the VDL laboratory sections • Washing glassware/utensils/supplies for all lab sections and prepare for final usage • Perform QA/QC procedures on media and reagents and document work performed • Maintain supply inventory for media/reagent preparation and prep room activities • Outside client purchasing/utilization- responsible for preparation and charging of outside client requests • Maintenance of all logs associated with proper function of the laboratory • Maintenance of autoclave and dishwasher, including verification of working status and arranging repairs as necessary • Work with section head and laboratory staff on standard operating procedures

Job Duty Category Bacteriology Laboratory Quality Control Responsibilities

Duty/Responsibility

• Temperature and alarm checks for environmental chambers, incubators and other laboratory equipment • Maintenance of logs associated with proper functioning of the laboratory and laboratory equipment • Eyewash and shower station testing and records keeping • Maintenance of CO2 incubators, monitoring of CO2 levels • Other duties as assigned • Maintain adequate inventory of supplies that are routinely used in the bacteriology lab, continually evaluate mechanisms for cost savings in purchased supplies
