Description of Job

The Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan (CMHIFL) is a 94 bed adult inpatient psychiatric facility located in Denver, CO that provides excellent psychiatric care to a vulnerable patient population. As one of the State's two mental health hospitals, CMHIFL serves a highly diverse patient population and embraces a recovery-oriented and trauma-informed approach to care. You will join us during an exciting time of growth as we increase inpatient bed capacity in the near future.

We are seeking a seasoned and experienced leader with extensive inpatient psychiatric experience and a demonstrated commitment to the seriously and persistently mentally ill patient population. The successful candidate will be able to quickly gain credibility as a trusted, experienced clinician and a highly collaborative, fair, and flexible administrator.

The Chief of Psychiatry:

  • Provides leadership, supervision, and direction of psychiatric services in the hospital. Core responsibilities include providing clinical and administrative leadership, embracing continuous quality improvement, interfacing with internal and external stakeholders, and ensuring the delivery of excellent patient care.

  • Supervises physicians, mid-level licensed independent practitioners, and non-clinical staff.

  • Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of care, treatment, and services and support the mission of the hospital.

  • Ensures accreditation standards are met.

  • Provides clinical expertise, consultation and second opinions on difficult cases.

  • Collaborates with hospital administration, the medical staff, and other departments to shape and direct initiatives.

  • Provides evidence-based psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment in an inpatient setting and provides expert testimony for court-ordered medication and treatment.

Our psychiatrists are supported by a team of professionals including medical physicians, social workers, psychologists, and a physician-friendly administration.

  • Provides additional in-house therapeutic and consultative services including electroconvulsive therapy, behavioral neurology, neuropsychology, dentistry, PT/OT, and others, in addition to a robust network of community-based medical resources.

  • Currently serves a civil patient population with serious mental illness. As hospital bed capacity increases over the next few years, some inpatient beds may be dedicated to forensic patients.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights


  • Graduate of an accredited Medical School

  • Completion of an accredited US General Psychiatry Residency

  • Board Certification (or eligible for examination) by the ABPN

  • Unrestricted Colorado Medical License in good standing

  • Current DEA certificate

  • AHA basic life support (BLS)

  • Eligible to practice in a State institution and must pass background and drug screen

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 years post-residency experience in inpatient adult psychiatry serving a severely and persistently mentally ill patient population

  • 5 years of experience in the supervision of licensed professional staff to include physicians, mid-level providers, and other clinical staff.

  • Progressive management experience coordinating and managing healthcare in a complex environment to include managing accreditation, ensuring compliance, and promoting continuous quality improvement.

  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Excellent problem-solving, facilitation, and analytical skills

Conditions of Employment:

  • The successful candidate will be willing to submit to and successfully pass a full criminal background check (Name check, TRAILS, Drug Screen and Fingerprinting).

  • The successful candidate must pass a health screening evaluation and comply with mandatory annual influenza vaccination requirements.
