The Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs is a distinguished and innovative college providing excellence in education, scholarship and practice in the health professions, facilitating collaboration for the promotion of a healthy community. The college currently serves 1400 students (80% undergraduate and 20% graduate) through its programs in theDepartment of Nursingand theDepartment of Health Sciences. Planned growth of existing programs and expansion in the areas of anatomy, nursing, physiology, exercise science, and physical therapy have the potential to double enrollment in the college over the next five years.

The college plays a key role in the strategic development and expansion of the Health and Wellness Village outlined in the UCCSStrategic PlanandMaster Plan. To date, one building has been completed and one is under construction. The Lane Center for Academic Health Sciences opened in 2014 and features theUCCS Health Circle, a cutting-edge concept that fuses various mental and physical health services to create a unique model for integrated healthcare education, research, and preventive primary, and specialty care services. TheWilliam J. Hybl Center for Sports Medicine and Performance, anticipated to open in 2020, will integrate the clinical expertise ofCentura Healthwith the college’s academic capabilities to create a world-class environment for clinical practice, interprofessional education, and research. The Hybl Center is part of the largerCity for Championsproject aimed at promoting the city of Colorado Springs as an international destination. The Dean of the Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Beth El College of Nursing and Health Sciences is the chief academic and administrative officer of the college and reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The Dean demonstrates strong leadership, management and development skills to support faculty in teaching, research, and service.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Providing strategic leadership for the college

  • Working closely with college leadership, staff, and faculty to advance the college

  • Representing the college, and serving as its primary advocate, to the campus, system, discipline-based constituencies and the community

  • Leading the faculty in fulfilling the college's educational, scholarly and service missions

  • Enhancing a culture of diversity and inclusive community within the college and with constituents beyond the college

  • Encouraging a climate of support and excellence for students within the college

  • Obtaining resources, support and funding to sustain the college's mission by leading efforts to acquire external funding through gifts and grants

  • Providing effective management of the college, including careful implementation of all applicable campus, system and state policies

  • Working collegially with fellow members of the Deans’ Council and other senior university administrators to advance the mission of the University.

/Job Expectations and Duties:/

The Dean provides leadership to the Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences:

  1. Establishes a shared vision that is consistent with the mission and goals of the university and college.

  2. Initiates and maintains strategic plans for academic programs, college departments and collaborative initiatives by demonstrating knowledgeof curriculum, current standards, practices and trends in nursing and health science education.

  3. Advances a research environment aligned with the mission of the campus.

  4. Promotes quality academic programs that meet the educational requirements of the students and external constituents.

  5. Supports faculty and administrators in the development of dynamic, complex inter-professional healthcare programing for the college, university and community.

  6. Encourages a climate of student support and success.

  7. Plans and coordinates academic program reviews to acquire and maintain accreditation.

  8. Maintains an environment of open communication with all interactions carried out in a professional manner.

  9. Enhances a culture of diversity and community with faculty, staff, and students.

  10. Uses excellent communication and interpersonal skills to articulate the college’s vision, mission and goals to the UCCS campus, CU system, and external constituents.

The Dean is responsible for development activities in the College:

  1. Develops community, industry and government partnerships that support college programs and provide external resource enhancement.

  2. Facilitates positive engagement with alumni, community volunteers, and donors.

  3. Obtains resources, support and funding to sustain outstanding undergraduate and graduate programs.

  4. Develops a research infrastructure to assist the faculty in seeking sponsored research and training program opportunities.

  5. Obtains funding for scholarships, laboratory equipment, and capital development.

  6. Works in collaboration and coordination with University Advancement related to fundraising activities.

The Dean exercises effective administration and management skills in the College:

  1. Provides effective management and execution of fiscal policies and procedures.

  2. Makes decisions in a timely, ethical, and professional manner.

  3. Deals fairly and equitably with faculty, staff, and students.

  4. Supervises faculty and staff personnel, oversees faculty workload with input from the appropriate department chair, establishes and ensures compliance with equitable policies and procedures including those for hiring, promotion, and salary adjustments.

  5. Establishes policies and procedures for shared college governance and collegial decision making.

This position has been determined to be exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Salary Range: $180,000.00 - $194,000.00

Minimum Requirements:

• Possess an earned doctorate in an appropriate health science-related discipline, such as athletic training, exercise science, health promotion, nursing, nutrition, or physical therapy.

• Have a record of teaching and scholarship warranting the award of tenure at the rank of Professor.

• Have previous experience in higher education and/or senior executive administration.

Preferred Requirements:

• Be a visionary leader with experience in an academic health center environment and/or in developing health science programs.

• Have demonstrated success in obtaining research grants.

• Have a history of active community engagement.
