About this role

Our Psychiatric Registered Nurse coordinates the care of patients in the RISE program; works closely with the jail nursing staff and psychiatrists to ensure continuity of care; uses the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the provision of comprehensive psychiatric and medical care; and participates in the delivery of program services and demonstrates thorough knowledge and therapeutic intervention skills based on knowledge of psychiatric mental health disorders, human growth and development and principles of psychiatric rehabilitation.

What you bring to the table


  • Graduated from an accredited college, university or vocational school nursing program.

  • A Bachelor of Science Nursing degree from an accredited school and/or certification in mental health nursing is preferred.


  • Experience in correctional mental health and/or psychiatric care at a secure facility.

  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.

  • Ability to read and communicate in English.

  • High degree of empathetic listening, tact and kindness toward others.

  • Ability to communicate well verbally.

  • Must hold a current State of Colorado nursing license or eligible for same through Licensure by Endorsement through reciprocity.

What you will do

  1. Demonstrates thorough knowledge and therapeutic intervention skills based on knowledge of psychiatric mental health disorders, human growth and development, and principles of psychiatric rehabilitation.

  2. Coordinates the ordering of our patients' psychotropic medications with the RISE Psychiatrist and the jail nursing staff.

  3. Provides psycho-educational groups to the patients, coordinates communication between the MDs, and assists them in monitoring psychotropic medication efficiency and side effects.

  4. Completes an initial nursing assessment and communicates any relevant information to the ACSO medical department.

  5. Participates in treatment planning and care coordination.

  6. Serves as a resource and role model for multidisciplinary staff

  7. Triage of basic medical complaints from RISE patients and assists RISE patients to utilize jail medical services when needed

  8. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of all applicable nursing services and related policy and procedures including adequate knowledge of the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS), Office of Behavioral Health (OBH) and jail policies.

  9. Proper utilization of medical equipment including glucometers.

  10. Demonstrates thorough understanding of all requirements, practice standards and regulatory requirements relating to the administration of medications; facility policy and procedures; documentation requirements; medication education.

  11. Continues professional development through in-service education, workshops, conferences, and self-study necessary to maintain current knowledge applicable to the position.

  12. Is sensitive to cultural diversity issues, treats patients as an individual, and considers the culture of the patients when providing care and treatment.

  13. Is knowledgeable about care and treatment needs of patients of different ages. Provides individualized care and treatment that is consistent with/sensitive to the age and life span developmental needs of each patient.

  14. Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.

  15. Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.

  16. Must be alert at all times; pay close attention to details.

  17. Must be able to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis.

  18. Perform other duties as assigned.
