Nature of Work

The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus has an opening in the Department of Ophthalmology for a full-time methodologist at the Senior Professional Research Assistant level. This position is with the Cochrane Eyes and Vision US Project (CEV@US). The mission of the CEV US Project is to build a critical mass of evidence-based eyes and vision healthcare providers and researchers. The main goal of CEV@US is to support authors with preparing and completing systematic reviews in eyes and vision. Primary duties include providing methodological support for the production of systematic reviews of interventions to prevent and treat eye disease and visual impairment and coordinating the activities of CEV systematic reviews conducted by US-based ophthalmologists, optometrists, and other vision researchers.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in the systematic review process such as refining research questions, identifying and assessing relevant research studies for eligibility, critically appraising primary studies for bias, developing data collection forms, extracting/entering data, performing qualitative and quantitative synthesis (meta-analyses) of primary studies, and preparing manuscripts for publication in The Cochrane Library .

  • Serves as a technical expert and provide regular consultation to more than 50 US-based eye care clinicians and vision researchers conducting systematic reviews and performs any or all of the key tasks mentioned above to provide assistance as necessary.

  • Works closely with the Project Director, Principal Investigator, and additional CEV staff in the United Kingdom to resolve methodological and statistical issues and to ensure that reviews conducted by US-based researchers are of the highest quality.

  • Assists with the development and preparation of training materials and actively participate in workshops on evidence-based healthcare and systematic review preparation.

  • Participates in methodological research conducted by CEV faculty, provides support to staff by identifying unpublished clinical trials, assists with reports to the funding agency, participates in journal clubs, organizes conference calls and staff meetings, and performs other tasks as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge of epidemiology and clinical trial study design, sources of biases, data collection, analysis, and interpretation.

  • In-depth knowledge of systematic review process and methodological expectations.

  • In-depth knowledge of the Cochrane procedures.

  • Strong analytic and writing skills essential.

  • Ability to prepare teaching materials and present in front of a large audience.

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Ability to be team oriented, flexible, and possess the ability to work independently.

  • Familiarity with the processes to ensure ethical human subjects research.

  • Must be timely, very organized, and detail oriented.

  • Ability to work with multiple investigators on multiple projects.

  • Proficient with systematic review software, such as RevMan and Covidence.

  • Proficient with computers/Microsoft office software and citation management software such as EndNote.

Salary and Benefits

The salary range ( or hiring range ) for this position has been established at $49,000 to $85,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Epidemiology or other health related field.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of experience related to the preparation and interpretation of systematic reviews.

  • One year of experience working with a clinical research team.

  • Experience in ophthalmology and vision research.
