University of Colorado Senior Professional Research Assistant in Aurora, Colorado

University of Colorado – School of Public Health

Senior Professional Research Assistant

The University of Colorado Denver l Anschutz Medical Campus seeks individuals with demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive learning and working environment. We value the ability to engage effectively with students, faculty and staff of diverse backgrounds.

The Colorado Integrated Food Safety Center of Excellence (Colorado CoE) is dedicated to improving foodborne illness surveillance and outbreak response in our 10-state region and nationwide. A collaboration between the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and the Colorado School of Public Health (ColoradoSPH) at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, the Colorado CoE provides assistance and training to state and local health departments to build their capacity to track and investigate foodborne disease. The Colorado CoE also conducts research aimed at identifying and implementing model practices for foodborne disease surveillance and outbreak detection and response. The Senior Professional Research Assistant will work with the CoE team at ColoradoSPH and CDPHE to coordinate CoE activities and conduct practice-based research projects on a variety of topics related to foodborne disease surveillance and outbreak detection and response.

Direct supervision by Ms. Alice White, Research Instructor, Department of Epidemiology

Working with members of the CoE team at ColoradoSPH and CDPHE, this position will: Conduct practice-based research (50%); coordinate CoE projects and training activities (30%); and support CoE reporting and communications (20%).

Conduct practice-based research (50%): This position will conduct research on a variety of topics related surveillance and outbreak detection and response. Some projects use existing surveillance data to address important research questions and develop tools to improve the timeliness and efficiency of surveillance and outbreak investigations. Other projects implement and evaluate modified and innovative methods/approaches to surveillance and outbreak response that can improve workflow and help manage changing practices and an increasing workload. For example, an increasing caseload and interview burden was identified by states in our region as a major strain on resources, so we are working to evaluate the efficacy of online interviewing with our mHealth Project.

Coordinate CoE projects and activities (30%): This position will help coordinate the Student Enteric Disease Interview Team. Established in March 2020, this interview team supports CDPHE and local public health agencies (LPHAs) who do not have the capacity to conduct routine enteric disease interviews during the COVID-19 response. The team is also providing surge capacity to the state and LPHAs in Nebraska and Wyoming. This position will also work with subject matter experts and staff at the Rocky Mountain Public Health Training Center to develop and deliver online trainings, tools, videos, and other resources to public health professionals.

Support CoE reporting and communications (20%): This position will help compile and coordinate monthly reports to CDC; coordinate quarterly Regional Steering Committee meetings; and communicate with external partners using the CoE ListServ and the COE website.
