CU Cancer Center is a consortium of approximately 261 researchers and physicians at three state universities and three clinical institutions, all working toward its vision to prevent and cure cancer while being a global model for patient care delivery, interdisciplinary research, and training.
The flow cytometry specialist will be part of the staff of the Cancer Center Flow Cytometry Shared Resource, a campus service center which provides flow cytometric cell analysis and cell sorting technology to campus researchers. This is a full-time position in the Flow Cytometry Shared Resource of the University of the Colorado Cancer Center.
_Examples of Work Performed_
Operation of bench-top flow cytometers (Beckman Coulter Gallios and Cyan, Propel Labs Yeti) for cell analysis consisting of data collection, analysis, and preparation of graphics for data display. Assays are frequently complex in nature, consisting of up to 15 fluorochromes which require compensation for multiple spectral overlaps and intricate gating criteria
Operation of Fluidigm CyTOF2 mass cytometer
Perform high-speed cell sorting on Beckman Coulter MoFlo XDP and AstriosEQ instruments for facility users
Operation of Luminex Magpix instrument
Setup instrument hardware and software to perform specific research projects. This includes laser beam alignment, optical filter selection, cell sorter operational parameters selection, and instrument protocol development
Perform both general and project-specific quality control procedures to ensure instrument performance for research projects. This includes troubleshooting and interaction with field service engineers for instrument repairs
Assist with shared resource equipment scheduling, usage tracking, and billing
Work involves hazardous chemicals, handling viable human cells, biological substances, and laser beams
_Required Competence/Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities_
Motivated, reliable, with the ability to work independently, quickly learn new techniques and have strong interpersonal skills
Broad knowledge of computer hardware and software
Ability to manage multiple tasks and a demanding schedule
Able to work with complex bio-medical instrumentation
Basic knowledge of immunology and molecular biology
Must be able to lift 30 lbs
Education: BS/ BA in biology, chemistry, medical technology, or other related discipline.
One year of research or related experience
Three years of flow cytometry and cell sorting experience
