Nature of Work

A full–time Advanced Practice Research Nurse position with the ACTG Clinical Trials Unit (ACTU), now part of the new COVID-19 Prevention Network (CoVPN), at the University Of Colorado Denver School Of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the CoVPN has been formed and will now contribute to the development of large-scale COVID-19 vaccine efficacy trials. The mission of the ACTG has been to develop and conduct scientifically rigorous translational research and therapeutic clinical trials that investigate the viral and immune pathogenesis of HIV-1 infection and its complications. Additional efforts will now be given for clinical trials to evaluate novel therapeutic agents and to find an effective and safe vaccine against COVID-19.

This position reports directly to the Colorado AIDS Clinical Trials Unit (ACTU) Site Leader (Professor of Medicine) in the Division of Infectious Diseases.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Interpreting and implementing ACTG and industry research protocols including following study procedures, consenting and following caseload while maintaining source documentation, completion of clinical notes, transcribing on to specific research source documentation and electronic data entry.

  • Screening potential study participants, explaining study details to medical providers prior to initiating screening of their patients. Reviewing protocol inclusion and exclusion criteria with participants and their providers in order to determine eligibility.

  • Independently assess all participants during the length of study and specified post-study time-periods in order to evaluate for adverse drug reactions and possible adverse medical events. Communicate with ACTG team members and industry sponsors regarding events and any other important issues.

  • Maintain on-going updates to participant providers throughout the length of the study as well as providing any available results.

  • Order appropriate lab tests and medical procedures by coordinating with ancillary medical departments in order to fulfill study defined evaluations while assuming responsibility to assure that all samples and procedures are completed correctly. Assist in obtaining compartmental samples such as genital secretions and spinal fluid. Perform phlebotomy on participants.

  • Other assessments include physical examinations and visual assessments to determine the presence of STI's.

  • Review and determine blood test toxicities and communicate with site PI regarding abnormal results when necessary.

  • Evaluate other non-study complaints and act as a bridge between participant and provider in order to resolve these complaints.

  • Interacting and training CTRC research staff in order to meet their requirements around study procedures as well as scheduling participant appointments and ordering procedure supplies in a prompt and thorough manner.

  • Strive to provide excellent customer service and participant care in order to maintain long term participant retention.

  • Participate in industry start-up meetings, meet with sponsor and ACTG monitors in order to resolve data issues. Routinely check various electronic data systems in order to resolve queries in a timely fashion. Participate in study conference calls.

  • Participate in site study start-up meetings to ensure that all site staff understand priories, individual responsibilities and to encourage autonomy with accountability.

  • Creating flow sheets and checklists, which serve as source documentation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

This position requires enthusiasm for medical research with knowledge or interest in HIV and COVID-19. One must be self-directed, independent with good organizational skills, and the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.

Essential Functions

All duties and responsibilities listed above are designated as essential function. Incumbent must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time; must be able to lift at least 15 pounds; must be able to look and read small computer screen for long periods of time.

Working Conditions

This position works Monday-Friday based on the research subject schedule. The position will be located at the Colorado AIDS Clinical Trials Unit (ACTU) on the University of Colorado Denver, Anschutz Medical campus in Aurora, CO.

Salary and Benefits

The hiring salary is negotiable and commensurate with skills and experience. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualification

Requires a master’s degree in nursing (MSN)

Active or eligible for nurse practitioner licensure in the State of Colorado

2-year prior experience in clinical nursing

Preferred Qualifications

5-year work experience in a clinical research setting

Familiarity with FDA, OHRP, GCP, International Council for Harmonization of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals (ICH), and HIPAA regulations
